Myanmar’s Minister for Electricity holds meetings by candelight during power outages

Turns out even Myanmar’s Minister for Electricity struggles during power outages.

That’s the upshot from a series of photos purporting to show politician Pyae Myint Htun, the newly appointed National League for Democracy official, hosting a meeting by candlelight during a blackout yesterday in Yangon.

The city’s power supply struggles during the hot dry season every year and 2016 has been no exception.

The photos, which could not be independently verified, quickly went viral on Facebook, with commenters praising the new government’s thriftiness. No generators for them.

Others were more skeptical.

“Stupid,” wrote Wai Lin. “Why even government offices don’t have emergency light? That shows poor management. Not to be proud.”

Still, sure makes us feel better about our dark, sweaty nights.
