Myanmar’s Kafkaesque parliament building opens to tourists

Attention tourists!

Forget Ngapali beach, Bagan or any other destination overrun with sightseers.

Myanmar’s parliament is where it’s at.

Or at least that’s what the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism wants you to think, as it has persuaded officials to make the forbidding building in the relatively new capital, Naypyidaw, open to visitors both local and foreign, Eleven Media Group reported.

Besides the experience of being in a place that looks like something out of the Wizard of Oz the director’s cut, it is difficult to see the draw for historically-minded tourists, seeing as Naypyidaw itself is only 10 years old.

But for so-called political tourism, it’s pure gold baby.

There is, of course, a catch. Visitors have to inform parliament three days in advance, according to Eleven, though it didn’t say how. Apparently a website is coming devoted to tourism in Naypyidaw, so maybe the answer lies there.

A decision on admission fees hasn’t been made yet.
