Seems like it’s one ‘first’ after another in Yangon these days.

A local conglomerate is planning Myanmar’s first ever subway in Yangon, crossing underneath Pyay Road beside the Junction Square shopping center in Kamaryut Township.

The project by Shwe Taung Group, which owns the mall, will allow pedestrians to avoid crossing one of the city’s most congested streets.

An official from Yangon City Development Committee told the Myanmar Times the underpass would be near to Saikpyoyay bus stop.

“We proposed they build a walkway over the road, but they want to build it underground,” said U Tin Maung Kyi, head of the engineering department.

Shwe Taung Group confirmed the plans, but couldn’t give an exact date for its completion – so you’ll have to contain that excitement for a while, at least.
