Myanmar’s first B&Bs set to open

The country’s first official bed and breakfasts, in Kayin State, have been given the green light, according to the Myanmar Times.

Under existing law, only hotels – defined as a place with more than eight guest bedrooms – can accept foreigners.

Draft legislation that would make them legal has not yet passed through parliament but the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism has allowed state governments to issue licenses in the meantime.

Two have been issued in Thandaung Gyi, a colonial hillstation only opened to foreigners in 2013, following a meeting on July 17.

Five more have applied but have yet to meet regulations.

Before you book your trip, though, you might want to read this account of a trip to Thandaung Gyi shortly after it opened up.
