Myanmar narrowly lost out on gold in the Asean Football Federation Women’s Championship as Thailand claimed a 3-2 victory in Ho Chi Minh last night.
The title, the Thai team’s second in a row, is especially meaningful this year as women’s football is not on the agenda for June’s Southeast Asia Games.
According to a report by asean.org, the teams were tied at zero until the 37th minute, when striker Kanjanam slipped the ball past Myanmar goalkeeper May Phu Ngon.
The Golden Land Girls equalised in the 56th minute but Thailand came back with a header in the 65th.
Myanmar leveled the field with a final goal in the 71th minute – but it was to no avail. Thailand’s Rattikan scored four minutes later.
There had been high hopes for the Golden Land Girls, who have won the championship twice, after they beat Australia’s U-20 team earlier this month.
