State media is not impressed with your so-called ‘cool’ tattoos

When the government changed hands in April, media observers feared state mouthpiece the Global New Light of Myanmar might surrender its, er unique voice, which has given us more than a few chuckles over the years. (Remember when they very recently declared the Internet not a “dot-com fad”?)

Happily, this has not been the case.

Never afraid to opine on the lifestyle habits of the youth – whether betel-nut chewing or cellphones – the newspaper this weekend turned its attentions to a new demon: tattoos.

“While the practice of tattooing is emerging as a ‘cool’ ‘fashion statement’ among young people across the world the dermatological hospital in Mandalay has seen more than 100 visits from young people with skin problems relating their tattoos over the last seven months,” the report read.

“It is not tattoos that can enhance how one looks, but exercise,” one dermatologist advised the paper. “My advice is to do physical exercises to be attractive.”

Thanks dad. New Light, never change.
