Myanmar’s Under-23 football team dealt Singapore a 2-0 defeat in the opening match of the 2017 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games yesterday, with 21-year-old striker Aung Thu scoring once in each half of the match.

The White Angels’ victory over Singapore at Kuala Lumpur’s Selayang Stadium was a repeat of the Asian Football Confederation Under-22 Championship qualifier last month, which Myanmar also won 2-0.

Myanmar played confidently throughout the match, applying relentless offensive pressure on the Young Lions. Aung Thu scored his first goal just ahead of halftime, handily placing the ball beyond the grasp of goalkeeper Zharfan Rohaizad.

Singapore came back strong in the second half but narrowly missed several shots at the goal.

In the 61st minute, Myanmar’s Mg Mg Lwin wove through Singapore’s defense, passing the ball to Aung Thu, who flicked it in and doubled Myanmar’s lead.

Aung Thu’s goals drew roars from the stadium’s 3,210 spectator’s, most of whom sported Myanmar colors.

Singapore will go on to face Malaysia today. Singapore was eliminated in the group stage at the last SEA Games in 2015.

Myanmar is now well-positioned to advance from Group A into the semifinals. The White Angels, who took silver at the 2015 SEA Games, will face face Laos tomorrow.
