Myanmar sets up ‘negotiation committee’ to tackle election day disputes

A cross-party negotiation committee, including members of both major parties, will be charged with handling disputes that arise during the historic vote planned for November 8, according to local media.

“The duty of the committee will be to solve the arguments on the election day,” Nay Min Kyaw, deputy secretary general of political party The National Democratic Force, told The Voice.

Easy as that? Not exactly. The body will be a mix of competing interests – representatives of 10 political parties, members of the Union Election Commission and government ministry officials.

It will be headed by Tin Aye, the current chairman of the UEC.

Members will be taken from the ruling National League for Democracy, the main opposition National League for Democracy and smaller parties like the Shan National Democracy Party, the Myanmar Farmer Development Party and the Shan National League of Democracy.

What we’d give to be a fly on that wall…
