Burmese celebrity singer Shwe Htike was arrested along with seven others in Yankin Township on charges of drug possession, trafficking, and abetment on Aug. 9.

The singer, whose real name is Ma Wai Lwin Zaw, is known for songs such as “I’ll Be Crying In The Rain”, “Where are you?” and “Just like this Song”.

During a joint operation with the Yankin Township Police Force and the 41st Anti-Narcotics Task Force, Shwe Htike was arrested alongside Htet Swe Min (Ko Saing) in their 17th-floor apartment in Golden City Condominium in Yankin Township. Authorities discovered 410 methamphetamine pills in separate resealable plastic bags, three grams of ice (crystal meth), and drug paraphernalia in their apartment.

After their arrest, Ko Saing led the authorities to another apartment they were renting on Awayer Road, also in Yankin Township. When police searched the apartment, they discovered a massive stash.

In a wardrobe, they discovered 58 resealable plastic bags containing 200 methamphetamine pills each and one bag containing 185 pills, for a grand total of 11,785 methamphetamine pills. Moreover, authorities found 770 grams of ice, 11 grams of heroin, 12 grams of marijuana, and other drug paraphernalia.

Shwe Htike and Ko Saing have been charged under sections 19(a) and 21 of the Narcotics Drug and Psychotropic Substance Law.

The bust of the Burmese singer and her partner was part of a larger crackdown on a drug ring carried out on Aug. 9. Six others were also arrested on drug-related charges that same day.

Among those arrested for drug possession, trafficking, and abetment were Thant Zin Maung (Ko Pauk), Kyaw Thura, Lin Lwin, Shwe Mone, Ei Ei Khine, Thet Swe Min (Ko Soe), and Ma Wai Lwin Zaw (Shwe Htike).
