Myanmar picks Miss Universe hopefuls

Meet the new Miss Universe Myanmars. Yup, there’s two of them.

May Barani Thaw, right, a 25-year-old model, will compete in 2015 international beauty pageant and Htet Htet Htun, 23, also a model, will follow in 2016.

Organizers wanted to give future hopefuls more time to prepare. (It probably takes a long time to look that good.)

The pair were picked from a pool of 20 candidates in a televised contest at the Gandamar Grand Ballroom in Yangon on Sunday.

Each will go on to represent Myanmar in the international beauty pageant, competing against women from more than 80 countries for the title of Miss Universe.

This year’s competition has been mired in controversy after owner Donald Trump, the frontrunner in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, dubbed Mexican migrants “rapists, killers and drug dealers” in his June nomination speech.

The comments prompted broadcasters to refuse to air the event.
