Myanmar passport ties North Korean passport in global travel freedom survey

Traveling can be a hassle. Traveling on a Myanmar passport can be a huge hassle.

Once again the document has scored low in global rankings. The passport was ranked 95 out of 104 countries in a Visa Restrictions Index compiled by Henley & Partners. The index has Myanmar tied with North Korea, many of whose citizens aren’t even allowed to leave the country (which makes you question the results a tad).

The ranking is determined by how many countries the bearer of the passport can visit visa-free or by getting a visa on arrival. Despite the low number, Myanmar has improved, climbing four spots from 2015.

And it’s also better than a separate survey released in April last year, in which Myanmar came in last place alongside South Sudan, Sao Tome and Principe, the Solomon Islands and the Palestinian Territorities.

Travel restrictions are easing up slightly in the region. Myanmar and Thailand completed a deal in August last year to let their citizens each visit the other country for two weeks at a time without a visa.

The deal initially covered only airports but overland travel was supposed to be added at a later date.
