Myanmar parliament steps up online security after email hack

This email, supposedly showing Aung San Suu Kyi expressing sympathy with the Rohingya plight, was widely circulated online.

Officials at Myanmar’s parliament are stepping up email security after their server was hacked for the first time in July.

A group called Generation New Wave are claiming responsibility for the July 17 attack and claims to have embarrassing emails showing ties between crony businesspeople and lawmakers.

The correspondence reportedly dates back to 2013, the Myanmar Times reported.

U Ko Ko Naing, director of the parliamentary office, told the newspaper that they had hired a local firm to boost security.

“The company will decide if they assign local or foreigner security experts. We are not sure when [the upgrade] will be finished,” he said.

Few seem overly worried about the hack, though, because – like Hillary Clinton – most of them use independent accounts, like Gmail.

Emails purporting to show Aung San Suu Kyi expressing sympathy with persecuted Rohingya Muslims are fake, according to recipient Tun Khin, the president of the Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK.
