Myanmar overseas workers suspect scam after money transfer service shuts

Myanmar nationals living in Singapore fear they could lose tens of thousands of dollars after an unofficial money transfer firm shut at the start of March.

Both the Singapore and Yangon branches of Tha Htay Tha Mee (Boss’ Daughter) closed on March 4, with transfers still pending, and have not re-opened, 7 Day reported.

The company wrote on its Facebook page that the closure was due to a funeral and that they would reopen, but clients have been unable to contact representatives from either branch.

Patrick Yang told 7 Day he transferred SG$40,000 on March 3. “My sister arrived back to Yangon on March 4 and the shop was closed when she came to take money,” he said.

“She couldn’t make a call. It was written at the shop to call them. But they didn’t pick up the phone.”

A phone number listed for representatives in Singapore also did not answer, he said.
