Myanmar MPs to vote on president after all nominees declared eligible

Myanmar MPs will vote in the country’s next president tomorrow, after the parliament this afternoon declared all three nominees eligible to run.

NLD candidates Htin Kyaw and Henry Van Thio as well as the military’s nominee, Myint Swe, were scrutinized by a committee formed of seven members including one military representative.

All three  have been declared fit, the BBC is reporting.

But while Myint Swe was approved by all seven members of the committee, the NLD candidates only scored 6/7.

NLD favorite Htin Kyaw, a senior aide to Aung San Suu Kyi, is expected to win the presidential vote. The party has a massive majority in parliament following last November’s elections.

The losing candidates will become vice-presidents.
