A Myanmar man was arrested by Thai police last night after he was caught stabbing a woman to death in a market area in Thailand’s Petchaburi province. The woman was later found to have been his estranged wife.

Witnesses said Aung Thu, 25, bought a long knife before accosting Zin War Yea, 35, outside a mobile phone shop in the Nong Som Market area in Petchaburi’s Khao Yoi district at around 7pm. She had just bought a new phone.

Aung Thu began arguing with Zin War Yea before pushing her to the ground. He then stomped on her chest and began stabbing her.

Shoppers called police from a nearby police booth to the scene. After they arrived, Aung Thu stabbed Zin War Yea a final time before he was arrested.

Police said the victim had six major stab wounds in her abdomen, throat and head.

A preliminary police investigation found that the husband and wife were both from Myanmar and worked in different factories in Thailand. Police told the Bangkok Post Aung Thu was a jealous man who quarreled with his wife frequently. Zin War Yea left him two months ago after he first assaulted her.
