Myanmar ‘warns’ US embassy after security drill led to bomb scare: reports

Myanmar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reportedly given the US embassy in Yangon a “warning” after a security drill on Sunday evening led to a bomb scare.

According to a report in local newspaper 7Day, the ministry, which is led by Aung San Suu Kyi, told the Americans in a phone call on Monday to “follow the rules of the host country”.

The embassy apologized on the same day for not giving prior warning before what it called a “routine security drill” ended with a substance police allege was tear gas leaking onto the pavement.

“On the evening of Sunday, July 24, the U.S. Embassy in Yangon held a routine security drill, which inadvertently inconvenienced passers-by and a neighboring business,” the statement said.

Members of the public told Coconuts Yangon they were forced to wash their eyes out.
