Myanmar has (almost certainly) chosen its president

Htin Kyaw, a senior aide to Aung San Suu Kyi who is an executive at her charitable foundation, has been named by the National League for Democracy as its choice for the presidency.

The 70-year-old son of famous poet Min Thu Wun was nominated by the lower house in Naypyitaw this morning.

He has technically been put forward for the vice president position, because Myanmar requires its president be chosen from a selection of vice-presidential candidates.

Ethnic minority candidate Henry Ban Htee You, from Chin State, was nominated by the upper house. Another candidate will be proposed by the military.

Because the NLD has a huge majority in parliament, the choice of president is in its hands. The Union Parliament will vote for the president from the three candidates next week.
