The Myanmar government has earmarked July 21 as the date it will release sensitive findings about religion from the 2014 census.
The data on ethnic population will come out in December, a spokesperson from the Ministry of Labor, Immigration and Population told the Global New Light of Myanmar.
The previous military-backed government delayed revealing the results of these parts of the census for fear of inflaming tensions between the majority Buddhist and minority Muslim populations.
Nationalists have cited what they say are high birth rates among Muslims as justification for their campaigns to “protect” race and religion.
A series of controversial laws passed last year were seen as an attempt to control birth rates among the Muslim population, particularly the persecuted Rohingya minority from western Myanmar.
Before 2014, Myanmar had not held a census since 1983.
