Myanmar government suspends unpopular cell phone tax

Some good news for a change.

You won’t have to pay that extra 5 per cent on cell phone top ups until next year, it turns out, as the government has decided to suspend the unpopular tax.

According to the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar, lawmakers on Wednesday decided to reschedule the application of the surcharge until the start of the 2016 fiscal year.

Two international telecommunications operators, Telenor and Ooredoo, had reportedly submitted complaints to the government.

Under the 2015 Union Tax law, information and technology services were originally listed as exempt from the 5 per cent tax but have since been withdrawn, according to KPMG.
