Myanmar is drafting a labor law to control the influx of foreigners

As anyone who has been to a café in Yaw Min Gyi can attest, there are quite a lot of foreigners in Myanmar these days. And it sounds like the government has noticed.

They are now drafting a new foreign labor law governing taxes and other regulations, according to Thein Swe, the Minister of Labor, Immigration and Population.

He was answering a question raised at parliament on Tuesday by MP Khin Ma Gyi from Kachin state, the Myanmar Times reported.

“We have found that foreigners are working in Myanmar at local companies that have received foreign investment, in sectors such as construction, mining and minerals, roads and bridges, IT and services,” she said.

“Foreign workers are working under many types of visa, which means fewer job opportunities for locals. As the volume of foreign investment rises, more workers will come from overseas.”

Makes sense, right?

Until the MP reportedly complained that foreigners were even sneaking into local football clubs…
