Myanmar Consumers Union launches web and mobile consumer complaint forms

Citizens with a complaint about a faulty product or rude customer service can now voice their concerns online through the Myanmar Consumers Union’s newly-launched site.

The website, available in both English and Myanmar, is part of the MCU’s efforts to handle consumer complaints more efficiently and on a larger scale.

In order to file a complaint, users have to fill out a consumer complaint form. After entering your personal details, the form asks for the company name and a specific staff person (if there is one) that you’d like to report. Consumers can then describe the problem and provide more information, as well as upload receipts, and choose how they’d like their problem solved (refund, repair, etc). Users can also note if they’ve already filed the same complaint with another organization.

The MCU hopes that streamlining a consumer complaint process will encourage citizens to speak up about substandard products and services so that improvements can be made.

“Consumers need to make complaints when they are unsatisfied or have been swindled. [As it stands] most of the time, consumers will just quietly endure [an incident] instead of filing a complaint,” Dr. Thein Han, a member of the MCU, told 7Day.

However, the MCU’s Secretary Maung Maung clarified that they would not be in charge of solving the complaints put forward by consumers. Rather, the MCU will screen and forward the reports to the Yangon Regional government’s Consumer Dispute Resolution Committee, who will then handle the disputes.

A mobile app has also been launched in conjunction with the site, and is available for both iOS and Android.
