Revellers in Naypyidaw have been banned from buying alcohol and wearing skimpy clothing during Thingyan Water Festival.

Authorities in the capital told Xinhua the sale of alcohol would not be permitted near to the pandals, or water-splashing platforms, in an attempt to stop boozed-induced brawls from marring the celebrations, which last through Friday.

The Chinese news service added that “merry making people are welcome” to throw water at nine pandals in the hotel zone.

Myanmar’s purpose-built administrative capital, unveiled in 2005, is not known for its wild parties.

In a recent Guardian article titled ‘Burma’s bizarre capital: a super-sized slice of post-apocalypse suburbia’, one resident lamented: “It’s not very interesting here.”

As Thingyan celebrations kicked off Monday, some Twitter users had already posted their thoughts on festivities in Naypyidaw.
