A Myanmar Air Force training jet crashed at around 10:15am today near a village in Taungoo Township, Bago Region. The injured pilot was found among the debris by local residents and rushed to a nearby military hospital. He died on the way.

Police identified the pilot as Major Arkar Win, who was in his mid-30s.

The Myanmar Defense Services said the Chinese-made Chengdu F-7M crashed because of a “technical failure” and said an investigation is underway.

Military plane wrecks have been relatively common in Myanmar in recent years. In June 2017, 122 military personnel and their families were killed last June when their plane was brought down over the Andaman Sea by bad weather.

The following September, the two pilots of a Yugoslav-made training jet were killed when their plane crashed in southern Rakhine State.
