MPT users report sim card registration mix-ups

Months after the nationwide sim card registration deadline kerfuffle, several MPT users are now reporting that their sim cards were registered under other people’s National Registration Cards without their knowledge, according to Kumudra.

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Transport and Communications’ Posts and Telecommunications Department announced that all mobile users must register their sim cards under their NRCs. While it was a good idea in theory, it seems that there were a few mix-ups in the process, particularly in the case of state-backed telco MPT.

One MPT user, Zaw Oo, explained to Kumudra: “I still hadn’t registered my phone with my NRC card. When I finally went to the MPT office, they said that [my sim card] was already registered. I told them that that wasn’t true and when they checked it again, it had been registered under someone else’s name.”

Another MPT user from South Dagon Township had a similar story, saying, “I hadn’t registered my card yet but I was still able to use it so I didn’t pay any attention. When I did go to register, my number had already been registered with someone else’s card. They had to check that it was really my number and then they changed the name.”

MPT officials told Kumudra that they had been unable to properly inspect each registration application due to the high number of customers who came during the three-month registration period.

If you use MPT and are now worried that your sim card might technically belong to someone else, you can check your registration by dialing 106 to reach the customer care hotline.
