Those who were wondering why a successful Burmese doctor with 12 years of experience in England’s National Health Service would risk it all to fondle a teenager’s breasts during a routine examination now have their answer, and it’s a very weird answer.
Dr. Unt Tun Maung, who was convicted on Saturday in England’s Durham County Court, was the vicitm of a ‘moment of madness,’ his lawyer said during the trial, according to the Daily Mail. Since Unt Tun Maung repeatedly denied the accusations in court, it was unclear whether the lawyer was describing his client’s psychological state during the incident or the disagreement over what happened in the examination room.
The assault occurred when the 19-year-old victim went to the doctor’s clinic complaining of chest pains in 2012. Unt Tun Maung asked her to take her bra off and cupped and squeezed her breasts, the Mail reported.
Unt Tun Maung’s career is “unquestionably over,” the judge said at the trial, according to the Mail. He will also be placed on a sex offender’s registry for 10 years.
Though the doctor was convicted of assaulting the 19-year-old, he was cleared on another charge relating to a 15-year-old patient in 2013, Chronicle Live reported.
According to the Irrawaddy, citing Burmese media reports, Unt Tun Maung is the husband of Burmese author Lun Htar Htar, whose Facebook account was deleted on Saturday. The Irrawaddy did not independently confirm that she is married to Unt Tun Maung.
