Earlier this month, authorities captured Zayar Phyo, a former military officer and one of the masterminds behind NLD legal advisor Ko Ni’s assassination at the Yangon International Airport last month.
Upon his arrest, police also discovered that Zayar Phyo had been using four different National Registration Cards. Now, the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, and Population — who is responsible for the registration and issuance of NRC’s — has vowed to take legal action if it turns out that the three additional cards were issued by one of their own employees.
Speaking to 7Day, permanent secretary Myint Kyaing of the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, and Population explained, “Because our department has yet to be notified to check the cards, we cannot officially say whether they are real or counterfeits. We can only conduct the investigation once we’ve been notified to do so. If it turns out that the cards are real and that an employee took a bribe, we will take legal action against said employee.”
Of the four cards that Zayar Phyo had in his possession, two were in his real name, while another two were under the aliases Nyan Lin Phyo and Arkar Aung.
7Day also reported that under the NLD administration, legal action has been taken against more than 40 employees of the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, and Population for illegally issuing NRC’s.
