Ministry of Information website hit by DDoS Attack

The Ministry of Information (MoI) released a statement on their Facebook page yesterday confirming that their website fell victim to a DDoS (distributed denial of service) attack on the night of December 7.

DDoS attacks are one of the most common forms of hacking. By flooding a site with traffic from multiple sources, the attack overwhelms the site and forces it to shut down.

According to the statement, the attackers used foreign IP addresses. No further specifics were provided.

The attack, which began around 9:30 pm on January 7, took the website offline for both mobile and desktop users from 4 am on January 8 until 7:30 pm on January 9, at which point local desktop users were able to access the site. However, it remained unavailable for a few more hours for mobile users and users located abroad.

Working with MPT and the Ministry of Transportation and Communication, the MoI was able to get the site fully up and running again yesterday.
