Mass CCTV installation planned for Yangon: “If there are 5,000 light poles in the quarter, there will be 5,000 CCTVs.”

Yangon authorities are planning on installing CCTV cameras all over the city, the Voice is reporting.

“If there are 5,000 light poles in the quarter, there will be 5,000 CCTVs. We are planning that,” General Tin Aung Htun, the Minister of Security and Border Affairs for Yangon region, was quoted as saying. “The process hasn’t started yet but I have informed [local areas] in advance.”

His comments were reportedly delivered on October 18 in Yangon’s Regional Parliament.

The process must have started already as CCTV cameras have started appearing on some blocks downtown.

The plan comes as fears of rising crime have made at least one community respond with their own security measures.
