Many voting in Myanmar election from abroad live in Singapore

Almost half of the Myanmar nationals who registered to vote from abroad have done so from Singapore, according to figures quoted in local media.

The tiny economic powerhouse has a large number of migrants from Myanmar, and more than 8,000 of them registered, according to 7Day Daily.

A total of 18,746 people plan on filing absentee ballots ahead of the November 8 poll. The government has been criticized for the low number, with many blaming red tape on the exclusion of up to two million people living outside the country.

Even in Singapore, the numbers were relatively low when compared to the 150,000 or so Myanmar nationals who work and live in the country.

“If it is easy to vote, people will be interested,” Aung Thaung Swe, a worker in Singapore, told 7Day. “Some just ignored it.”
