A pagoda in Mandalay has put up signs asking Pokemon Go players not to disturb prayers there, as urbanites across the country descend on religious sites hoping to catch the creatures.
The game, which encourages users to explore the real world in search of virtual reality Pokemon, launched in Myanmar unexpectedly earlier this month and has been wildly popular.
But the large number of Pokemon ‘gyms’, where players can battle one another, or Pokestops, where lots of the creatures can be found, located at pagodas means users have had some run-ins with the country’s strong Buddhist traditions.
A video clip showing staff at another pagoda asking Pokemon hunters to leave the compound went viral on Facebook last week.
The sign erected at the Aungdaw Mu pagoda reads: “We request that Pokemon Go game players do not disturb the prayer at the Aungdaw Mu pagoda.”
Seems fair. Unless there’s a Pikachu…
