Mandalay authorities reel in suspects accused of fishing in moat around royal palace

Police in Mandalay have arrested five men for allegedly fishing in the moat around the city’s royal palace.

The arrests, which were reported by the Mandalay City Development Committee, happened because the men were “fishing unpleasantly in a public area,” a post on the committee’s Facebook page said.

In Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-biggest city, the moat surround the reconstructed palace, which was mostly destroyed during aerial bombardments in World War II.

The last king, Thibaw, was exiled to India in 1885 by British colonial authorities, whose stance on fishing around the moat is not recorded by history.

In a strange move, the police posted a mugshot of two suspects with two of the dead fish on a table in front of them.
