Man flees pologamy charges after new bride’s family finds out about other wives

A 24-year-old man from Yangon Region is on the run after the family of his new bride found out he was already married – to two other women.

The apparently rather lazy lothario reportedly proposed to the women, all in their early twenties, over Facebook.

Htun Htun Wai, chief officer from Kyauk Tan police station, told the Voice Weekly: “He proposed to girls on Facebook by telling them he is single.”

He allegedly married a 22-year-old and 25-year-old first, but his luck ran out with the last one, a 23-year-old, with whome he moved to Sagaing Region.

The unnamed man is facing charges under the Monogamy Law introduced last year, which was thought to be aimed at Muslims but has mainly affected Buddhist men since its inception late last year.
