A man died in central Yangon’s Myanmar Plaza shopping center yesterday after an argument in its underground parking structure erupted into violence, police in the city’s Bahan township confirmed.

The two men, identified as Tint Htoo Soe and Yan Aung Oo, began throwing punches at each other after a heated verbal argument in the parking lot located between Myanmar Plaza and the Mélia Hotel on Kabaraye Pagoda road, a police representative told Coconuts Yangon.

While it’s unclear what the two men — both Bahan residents according to local-language outlet Akonthi — were fighting over, the confrontation ended when Tint Htoo Soe fell and struck his head on the concrete floor, an injury that proved fatal.

Yan Aung Oo has been charged with article 302 of Myanmar Penal Code, according to police. If convicted, he faces a life sentence and the possibility of capital punishment, although Myanmar rarely exercises the use of the death penalty.
