Man accused of cutting head off Aung San statue

A statue of Aung San installed to mark the 68th anniversary of his assassination was desecrated early this morning when a 27-year-old man allegedly cut off its head after hugging the likeness and crying.

It was around 6:30am when a local resident of Kyant Khin township in Irrawaddy Division approached the statue, which was put up in a local park, 7Day Daily reported.

“Before he cut the head, he hugged the statue and was crying,” one local resident said. “And also he was destroying the flowers which were sent by the people on Martyrs’ Day,” he added, referring to the annual holiday.

Aung San and several cabinet officials were gunned down on July 19, 1947. The local government in Yangon commemorated the anniversary by allowing members of the public to enter the Secretariat building – where the killings took place at 10:37 am – for the second year running. Normally the colonial-era structure is closed.

Citing local police, 7Day Daily identified the suspect as 27-year-old Ko Phyo, who also goes by the name Phyo Kyaw Htay.

Kyant Khin residents eventually saw what happened and detained the suspect for police. They are investigating.

Just guessing here, but he’s probably in deep shit.
