Local official stabbed to death in South Dagon shop by sword-wielding assailants

Police are searching for two men suspected of fatally stabbing a local official in a shop in South Dagon on Sunday night.

According to eyewitness accounts, 57-year-old Zaw Win, who took office as a quarter administrator two months ago, was traveling home by motorbike with his wife when he got into an altercation with two men, also on motorbikes.

The men allegedly followed him into a nearby store and attacked in the the darkness of a power outage. He was sent to San Pya Hospital but died on the way.

“The official came into my shop during the black out,” store owner Thaung Htike told Eleven Media. “Two men followed after him with swords and stabbed him. I was avoiding [the scene] as there were children in my store. I don’t exactly know how things happened because it was a black out night,” he said. “We sent the official to hospital after bandaging him with a longyi.”

The victim’s wife said he had tried to sort out a problem with the two men.

“Me and my husband were coming back by motorbike,” she said. “Another bike passed us and fell down. Then they were having a problem – that’s why my husband tried to stop them. And they were stabbing him. I just saw he ran into the store.”

Local people told Eleven that the official was well-liked in the neighborhood and had no known enemies.
