Local official claims majority in Yangon will back ruling party in election

A top local government official has predicted that the majority of voters in Yangon will back the ruling party in the general election later this year.

U Thar Win, the secretary of the Union Solidarity and Development Party in Yangon division, based this assumption on a rise in party membership since 2010.

There were 300,000 USDP members in Yangon ahead of the 2010 election but now there are 800,000, he claimed.

“I can’t say about the nationwide level, but I think we we will win over 50 per cent in Yangon,” he was quoted as saying by the Voice Weekly.

There are a total of 5.4 million USDP members nationwide, he added.
