LINE enlists celebrity help in battle for Myanmar chat app market

As Myanmar’s messaging service market grows ever more crowded, developers are out to prove their app has something different to offer.

There are locally-themed stickers, competing claims of better connectivity and, of course, celebrity endorsements.

LINE, a messaging service for IoS and Android which officially launched in Myanmar on Friday, has enlisted Aung Ye Lin and model Khin Win Wah to its cause.

They star in a new commercial with an adorably twee storyline about a connection forged over the app, and they also feature in kind of weird but cute sticker sets.

LINE, which had its soft launch in Myanmar in March, will be hoping to take a share in the market currently dominated by Viber, which has more than five million users.

WeChat officially launched last month and Facebook is still a popular choice. Myanmar language social media service MySQUAR, the company that owns MyChat, just raised $2.6 million in an initial public offering.

LINE offers messaging, voice and video calls, group chats as well as stickers.

“In 2012, LINE will establish partnerships with local businesses, corporations and well-known personalities to grow its local content and provide a great experience for users,” Darin Hwang, general manager of LINE Myanmar, said in a press release.
