Lightning kills three in Mrauk Oo

Three people were killed on Monday evening when lightning struck their hut in Mrauk Oo, Rakhine State.

Kyaw Tin Win, 29, Ba Hlaing, 28, and Than Mya Yi, 26, had taken shelter in the hut when thundershowers began as they were collecting grass to feed their cows. A young boy who was also in the hut when the lightning struck, but he survived.

According to Myanmar’s Disaster management Department, lighting has killed at least 70 people and windstorms have destroyed around 10,000 this monsoon season. The department expects deaths from lightning strikes to rise in the coming years as temperatures rise.

The government has advised people to turn off their electrical appliances, including TVs and mobile phones, during thunderstorms.
