Liberian national arrested over alleged currency scam

A 34-year-old Liberian man was arrested on Monday afternoon after police found equipment allegedly used as part of an illicit currency scam in his hotel room.

Raymond San Cho was staying in Olympic Hotel in the Yaw Myin Gyi area, according to West Yangon Police who said they found thousands of dollar notes that had been dyed black as well as other materials.

One scam to import money illegally involves dyeing bills black with iodine and then cleaning them in a special solution.

“We also found color ingredients for making imitation dollars,” an officer told The Voice.

San Cho entered Myanmar on a tourist via on January 14, according to the report.
