Lawyers Council in Thailand to appeal Koh Tao death sentence against two Myanmar migrant workers

The Lawyers Council of Thailand will appeal the death sentence handed to the two Myanmar migrant workers in the Koh Tao murders case.

The council will also seek the transfer of Zaw Lin and Win Saw Htun to Bangkok, Thai PBS reported.

Suwit Choei-ubon, the council’s vice-president of operations, said the appeal would focus on five “significant” points from the case, but declined to elaborate.

A Koh Samui court last month found the two men guilty of raping and killing Hannah Witheridge, 23, and killing David Miller, 24.

Their bodies of the two British nationals were found on a Koh Tao beach in September 2014.

The investigation into the killings drew allegations of police incompetence, torture and mishandling of evidence. A judge dismissed the torture allegations, saying there was no evidence it took place.

Suwit said he was confident the Appeal Court would give permission for an appeal.

The council will also request the transfer of the two men to Bangkok Remand Prison to facilitate visits.

It is unclear how this appeal with work in tandem with the defendants’ existing appeal.
