A parliamentary committee has proposed jail time for those caught using sex workers – rather than caning, as was originally suggested.
At the moment, only sex workers are punished under the 1949 Suppression of Prostitution Act.
Amendments to the law allowing for customers to be punished were submitted by Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brigadier General Kyaw Kyaw Tun in late June, the Myanmar Times reported.
Initially the amendment proposed men should be caned. Yes, as in beaten (usually on the ass) with a wooden stick.
But on July 20 it was changed to a prison sentence of up to one year with hard labor and a fine, according to the Times.
Also proposed: a section allowing for education to “rehabilitate” sex workers.
