Since our April post about Yoma, Carlsberg’s new beer made for the local market, we’ve been getting questions about the brew.
Not many people seemed to have tried it or even seen it. Ditto for Tuborg, its international brand being rolled out in Myanmar.
Yoma, which means mountain range in Burmese, was turning out to be quite the elusive beer. Where were they selling it, in a mountain range somewhere?
Carlsberg’s opening of a brewery in Bago on Thursday got us thinking about Yoma again, and in attempt to clear things up, we emailed Carlsberg’s public relations representative to ask about availability and price. We also asked about Tuborg. Here’s the response (note: “outlet” means a place where the beer is sold on draft. Carlsberg didn’t provide details on where it’s sold in shops and supermarkets).
“The beer is available in 23 outlets as per today and as the distribution grows we are installing 3-5 outlets every day,” the representative said. “In an average outlet Yoma Draught is sold at 600Ks ($0.60) and Tuborg is sold at 700-750Ks ($0.75). The pricing of Yoma compares with Myanmar Beer and the pricing of our international brand Tuborg compares with the regional brand Tiger Beer.”
In other words, you haven’t see a lot of Yoma and Tuborg because there isn’t a lot of Yoma and Tuborg. But that’s apparently about to change.
