The undeniable stars of the open day at the Secretariat on Tuesday were a group of school kids who were dressed as Myanmar historical figures and escorted around the property like dignitaries.
The occasion was Martyrs’ Day, the 69th anniversary of the July 19, 1947 assassination of Aung San and eight other people at the Secretariat.
It’s unclear who organized the costume drama, but the dozens of kids stole the show as they were guided by a line of people around the grounds, putting smiles on just about everybody’s face even as the underlying events of the day were tragic and cause for reflection.

Many were dressed as soldiers or wearing traditional garb meant to emulate the style of the leaders and figures who fell in 1947, including ethnic dress.
