In a bizarrely tragic course of events in Kachin state on Friday, a 46-year-old man died from lack of oxygen after trying to rescue a cow that had fallen into an abandoned well.
The accident happened in Mohnyin Township, the Global New Light of Myanmar reported.
Two men tried to save the victim, identified as U Than Aung Thein, but had to be rescued themselves by fire fighters, according to the paper.
Suffocations in wells are not unheard of.
Last year in Cambodia’s Siem Reap province, 7 people died after attempting to retrieve a cigarette lighter and some money from the bottom of a well. In that case, authorities also cited the low level of oxygen as a cause of death.
