Journalist stabs police officer and flees in car

Last Friday night, what started out as a vehicle accident where no one was injured escalated into the stabbing of a police officer, and a car chase.

The incident began in the town of Kawa — which is located in the Bago region — where a car carrying two local journalists and a third companion got into an accident with a motorbike.

“After the car and motorbike crashed, a large crowd started forming. A police officer was nearby so he went to help settle the dispute as they [the parties involved] were upset and crying while arguing,” a police officer told 7Day Daily.

However, out of nowhere, one of the journalists pulled out a knife and stabbed the officer. Afterwards, the three individuals got in their car and drove away.

When they reached the town of Inn Ta Kaw — approximately 14.5 km away from Kawa — the car hit a military officer and then crashed into a small shop on the roadside.

Authorities were able to arrest the two journalists upon arrival at the shop, but their companion managed to escape.

After searching them, authorities discovered that the culprit who stabbed the officer was a crime reporter from the Crime News Journal.

The military officer suffered a broken foot. Both victims are currently being treated for their wounds.

The Kawa police station has opened a case under Sections 326 (“Voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means”) and 338 (“Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety others”) of the Myanmar Penal Code. They are also on the hunt for the escaped third culprit.
