Japanese mall giant Aeon plans supermarket blitz in Myanmar

Japanese mall giant Aeon has announced plans to open 10 supermarkets a year in Myanmar starting from 2021, according to the Nikkei Asia Review.

Seeing as Yangon currently has a total of oh, er, not very many at all, that’s some ambitious planning.

The firm has already formed a joint venture with Creation Myanmar Group and is buying up and renovating its existing 14 Orange supermarkets, which are mostly in Yangon.

The first Aeon Orange store is scheduled to open by the end of this year, while the 10-a-year blitz will begin within five.

“We cannot delay in such a high-potential market,” Aeon President Motoya Okada told Nikkei.

He also reportedly hinted that Myanmar could be the site of a mega-mall similar to those operated by Aeon in Japan and elsewhere.

The Aeon Orange supermarkets will be smaller, at around 1,000 square meters each. Still… Shopping!
