Following reports that a soldier had made two separate attempts at sexually assaulting an inmate, the local Hluttaw representative personally visited and talked to the victim. The alleged incident took place at the Di Yae Pin Police Station, located in the Sagaing Region town of the same name.

“She was the only inmate in the women’s cell. After getting drunk, the guard on duty went into her room and do things such as tug her shoulder. Then he got angry that she didn’t reciprocate and start swearing and berating her. She says that he did the same thing the next night,” explained Hluttaw representative Hnin Khine Soe, as quoted by Kumudra.

The inmate was serving time for a theft-related charge, and had spent four months in jail so far.

Hnin Khine Soe also reported that when she went to speak to the inmate, the latter was still scared by the incident and unable to coherently answer her questions. When asked if she would like to take legal action against the guard, the inmate said that she’d be satisfied if Hnin Khine Soe just talked to the authorities to ensure that the incident wouldn’t happen again.

When asked about the topic, First Lieutenant Kyaw Kyaw of the Di Pae Yin Police Station reiterated Hnin Khine Soe’s report of the visit, adding that the officer in question was also currently being interrogated.
