If Suu Kyi’s sons take Myanmar citizenship, their mother could be president: outgoing Information Minister

If Aung San Suu Kyi’s two sons – and their wives – drop their British citizenship and become Myanmar nationals, could their mother finally become president?

That was the solution suggested by outgoing Information Minister Ye Htut this week at the sidelines of an ASEAN summit in the US, as rumors swirl over whether the Lady will assume the role.

Recent reports have suggested that delicate negotiations are taking place over amending a constitutional clause blocking presidential candidates with foreign relatives.

“Actually, 59(f) needn’t be suspended or amended,” said Ye Htut at the sidelines of an ASEAN conference in the US, according to the Global New Light of Myanmar.

“If the two sons want their mother to become the president, they and their wives can apply for Myanmar citizenship according to the 1982 Immigration Law.

“This is in fact their family matter.”

Myanmar does not recognize dual citizens, so Kim and Alexander Aris would have to surrender their foreign passports.

But during her two-decade long political struggle, Suu Kyi opted to put her family second to her country, and is reportedly estranged from Alexander.

Could they swoop in and make their mother’s dreams come true? Seems unlikely but, in this country, stranger things have happened.
