Hot weather halts heritage tours

As Yangon continues to swelter in the pre-monsoon heat, it’s a challenge to walk a few blocks, let alone spend an afternoon traipsing around buildings.

It’s not such a surprise then, to hear that Yangon Heritage Trust (YHT) has suspended its popular tours of the city’s historic downtown quarter until September.

Thurein Aung, a historical researcher and project manager with YHT, attributed the decision to a drop in demand after the start of the low season and “very hot weather”.

If you’re desperate, they’re still running private tours for $30 per person in groups of more than five. A tour for less than five people costs $150 total.

It looks set to be a sluggish few months for cultural activities – we recently reported the news that the Sunday snake-charming show at Yangon Zoo has also been suspended.
