Gridlock hellhole 8-Mile to get flyover in March

A four-lane flyover crossing Yangon’s traffic-clogged 8-Mile junction is set to open in March, according to local media.

The overpass is intended to relieve the mind-numbing congestion at the intersection of Kabar Aye Pagoda, Kyightwine and Pyay Roads, state-run newspaper the Global New Light of Myanmar reported.

Almost 27,000 vehicles sit at the 8-Mile junction daily, a survey by Crown Advance Construction found, as thousands of cars squeeze to and from downtown.

The idea is that drivers will save time by zipping over the flyover.

But first: five more months of roadworks.

Project Manager U Than Swe said there will be two lanes on each side of the building site, to allow cars to pass by smoothly.

Since 2011, the Yangon regional government has carried out multiple overpass projects intended to relieve mounting congestion in the city, including building the Myaynigone and Shwegondine flyover and a new one in Tamwe Township.
